Rising to the challenge
Holiday seasons often mark an increase in cargo thefts. Cargo theft groups exploit nighttime hours and weekends because more trucks are parked and left unattended. When a major holiday occurs, these extended weekends increase this risk because loads a left unattended for an extended period of times.
Most thefts occur in California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, and New Jersey.
Things to consider lowering your risk of cargo thefts include:
Be leery of truckers who are willing to an undesirable load for a lower rate than the industry standard. This may be a setup for theft.
CargoNet recommends securing all vehicles and trailers with high security locking devices, such as hardened padlocks, king pin locks, air cuffs and steering column locks.
At warehouse or distribution centers, make sure you are parked at a facility with security that practices common sense such as ensuring keys are removed from all equipment and stored in a secure location.
